Korean Terminology: Beginning and Ending Class

Sensei James begins and ends classes with a slew of Korean words. These are the Commands to Begin Class and the Commands to End Class. We use them to mark the formal beginning and ending of classes. They serve as a reminder to us to show respect for where we come from, respect for where our art comes from, and of the foundation of respect and trust between instructors and students.

In the junior ranking classes the instructor will usually call the commands himself. By the time you are an advanced student the student in the Senior position at the head of the line will be expected to call opening and closing commands.

Class begins by calling the class to attention. Saluting the flags. Taking a moment for meditation, clearing the worries of the day from your mind. The instructor and students will then face each other and bow as a mutual sign of respect.

Class ends in a similar fashion, calling the class to attention. Saluting the flags. Taking a moment for meditation and self reflection. The class and the instructor will bow to each other. At this time assistant instructors are acknowledged for their help in class. Finally any black belts in class are acknowledged.
